Preparing Before your Surgery

  • Prior to your surgery, a staff member will call to confirm your surgery time and ask questions regarding your medical conditions, allergies and medications.
  • Your physician or a facility nurse will tell you what time you are to stop eating and drinking prior to your surgery. If you do not follow their instructions, your surgery or procedure may be cancelled.
  • If you take medication for any condition, even if it is unrelated to your surgery or procedure, ask your physician or a facility nurse whether to take it the day of surgery.
  • Notify your physician if there is any change in your health, such as a cold, fever or sore throat, the week before your surgery.
  • For women, if there is any possibility you are pregnant, please notify your physician and a facility nurse.
  • If special financial arrangements are necessary, please call our business office prior to your surgery date.

Day of your Surgery

  • Bathe and dry your hair the morning of your surgery.
  • Do not use any styling products or wear make up, perfume or nail polish.
  • Do not wear or bring any valuables, including watches, rings or other jewelry.
  • Bring a storage container for contact lenses, dentures, and any other prosthesis. You will need to remove any and all of these during pre-op.
  • Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing. Upon arrival, you will change into a gown and slippers provided by the facility.
  • Arrive promptly at the scheduled time to allow adequate time for admission procedures.
  • Bring your insurance ID cards, any paperwork from your physician, such as test results, a list of your medications and a form of payment if your insurance company requires a co-pay.

Outpatient Recovery
After your outpatient surgery or procedure, you will be moved to the recovery area where you will be closely monitored until you are ready to go home.  It is normal to feel discomfort in the area of your surgery. You may also experience some drowsiness or dizziness, depending on the type of anesthesia you received

When you are fully awake, your family will be able to join you in the recovery area until you are discharged. Although the times vary, most patients are discharged 1 to 3 hours after surgery. For your safety, please arrange for an adult to drive you home after surgery. You will not be allowed to drive yourself home.

Inpatient Recovery
After your surgery, you will be moved to the recovery area where you will be closely monitored until you are ready to transfer to an overnight room. Patients requiring an overnight stay at Methodist McKinney Hospital will be taken to one of our private patient rooms to recover where your family is welcome to join you.

Patient Room Amenities:

  • Large, private rooms
  • Flat screen televisions
  • Hotel-quality beds and linens
  • Free WiFi access
  • Free room service meals and online ordering

Pediatric Surgical Patients
The staff will do everything it can to make sure you and your child are as comfortable as possible - before, during and after their surgery. We know from experience that it helps to show and tell children and their parents what they can expect when the come the hospital.

One of our nurses will attempt to call you at least one day before your child's surgery to review instructions, including the Preoperative Guidelines and the Day of Surgery Checklist. If you can't be reached by phone, please be sure to call the center no later than the day before surgery.

On the day of surgery, it is a good idea to bring your child's favorite stuffed animal, blanket, toy, etc. from home so he or she will be more at ease. Just before the procedure we'll help get your child dressed into a surgical gown and slippers.

Even though we never leave young patients alone, we prefer that you stay with your child at all times, right up until the time your child is brought to the operating room. When your child's surgery is over and he or she is stable you will be able to join them in the recovery room.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or court-appointed custodian (with appropriate paperwork).

If you and your child would like to tour the facility before your day of surgery, we'd be happy to arrange it. Please call us at least one week before your day of surgery to make arrangements.

Special Needs Patients
We are happy to accommodate any special needs of a patient. We ensure accessibility and effective communication regardless of your situation. Please notify the center of your special needs prior to arriving on your day of surgery.
