What should and should not I bring to the hospital?
Patients should bring:

  • Your medications if you were told to bring them with you. Keep your medications in the original bottles, but leave your narcotics at home.
  • A copy of your driver’s license and insurance cards.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
  • Eyeglasses. You will not be able to wear contact lenses.
  • Dentures, hearing aids and cases in which to store them.

Patients should not bring:

  • Do not wear hair spray, body lotion or perfume.
  • Do not wear any jewelry (including wedding rings, earrings and piercings), makeup or nail polish.
  • Leave valuables at home.

When can I eat before my surgery?
Unless otherwise instructed, do not eat or drink anything after midnight the day prior to your surgery. If you have been instructed to take certain medication, take it with only a sip of water.

Will I be able to drive home after surgery?
No, you must arrange for someone to drive you home on the day of your surgery. During surgery, you are given medication and/or anesthesia that will make you drowsy that day and perhaps the day after.

It is imperative that you do not drive, operate any power tools or machinery, or make important decisions until 24 hours after your surgery. Spend the rest of the day taking it easy and resting. You may resume these activities only if you feel perfectly normal and alert.

How will my pain be treated after my surgery?
As you wake up from anesthesia, you will be asked multiple times about your pain.  There are multiple ways the nurses will address this pain, including IV and oral pain medication. The surgeon will send a prescription for pain medicine home with you. It is important to take the medication as prescribed and maintain awareness of your pain for the next 24 – 48 hours.

When can I see my family after my surgery or procedure?
After your outpatient procedure, you will be moved to our recovery area. When you are fully awake, your family will be able to join you. Until then, your family is welcome to wait for you in our comfortable waiting area.

What do the facility fees cover?
Your bill from Methodist McKinney Hospital covers the use of this facility only. It does not include professional fees charged by physicians for laboratory, pathology, medical care, surgery, or anesthesiology.

Who can I call if I need financial assistance?
If you require special financial arrangements, please call our business office at (469) 424-6400 prior to your surgery to discuss alternative methods of payment. Our patient account representatives are available 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to discuss financial arrangements with you.

Who administers anesthesia?
Anesthetics are administered by contracted anesthesia providers, which include anesthesiologists and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) who work closely together in providing you with the highest level of care.

Will I get to speak with the person doing my anesthesia before my surgery?
Yes. On the day of surgery your anesthesia provider will sit down with you and review you medical history, and explain their plan for your care. You will have the opportunity to have all of your questions or concerns addressed at that time. Please contact the facility's admissions nurse if you have concerns that need to be addressed prior to the day of surgery.

Is my physician employed by this facility?
No. The physicians and other specialized medical service providers, including anesthesia, radiology or pathology, which use this facility, are independent contractors and are not employed by the facility. Since they are independent contractors, the facility is not responsible or liable for their acts or omissions.
